- Do we need ISO 27001 or is Cyber Essentials enough?
- Cyber Essentials is achievable, inexpensive and often sufficient, particularly for public sector supply. ISO 27001 is a substantial undertaking and worth it when customers require it. Pursuing ISO because it sounds more serious is an expensive way to find that out.
- Is this the same as penetration testing?
- No. A penetration test finds technical vulnerabilities at a point in time. This owns the overall security position — policy, risk, compliance and response. Both matter, and a test without anyone to act on it produces a report and no change.
- How much time does it take?
- A few days a month for most mid-sized businesses, more during a certification push. It is governance rather than operations, so it does not replace whoever administers your security tooling.
