- What does it actually cover?
- Five areas — boundary firewalls, secure configuration, access control, malware protection and patch management. It is a baseline rather than a comprehensive standard, and it addresses the commodity attacks that make up the majority of incidents rather than targeted ones.
- Why do organisations fail?
- Usually unsupported software and patching timescales. Devices running operating systems past end of support, or applications nobody has updated, fail immediately, and the required window for applying critical patches is shorter than many organisations currently manage.
- What is the difference from Plus?
- Verification. The basic certification is a self-assessment questionnaire; Plus adds independent technical testing of a sample of your systems. Some contracts specify Plus, and passing the basic level first is the normal route to it.
- Is it enough on its own?
- As a security position, no — it is a floor. It will not satisfy customers expecting an information security management system, and it does not address governance, risk assessment, staff awareness or incident response. Organisations holding sensitive data, or selling to buyers with mature security requirements, will eventually be asked for something more substantial. As a demonstrable baseline for procurement, it does its job well.
