- Because Cloudflare terminates the connection and makes its own to your origin. The real address travels in a header instead, so any application logic reading the connection address gets Cloudflare's — which breaks silently rather than producing an error.
- What breaks first?
- Rate limiting and abuse controls, usually. They see all traffic as coming from a small number of addresses, so a limit intended per visitor triggers against everybody simultaneously — and it is not always obvious that this is what has happened.
- Should every record be proxied?
- No. Mail records must not be, and some services behave badly behind a proxy, so the migration involves deciding per record rather than enabling it everywhere — mail delivery failing after a DNS move is a common and avoidable outcome.
- Does the origin need locking down?
- It should be. If the origin address remains reachable directly, anyone who finds it can bypass everything Cloudflare provides, so restricting the origin to accept only Cloudflare traffic is what makes the protection meaningful rather than optional.
