- Because each function instance opens its own. A traditional server maintains a small pool for all requests, whereas concurrent serverless invocations each connect independently — so a database configured for a hundred connections is exhausted by a hundred simultaneous requests.
- How is that fixed?
- With a pooler in front of the database, or a driver designed for serverless access. Both keep the number of actual connections bounded regardless of how many functions are running, and one of them needs to be in place before the migration rather than after.
- What about long-running work?
- It needs somewhere else. Functions have an execution limit, so report generation, large imports and anything taking minutes will be terminated mid-way — a queue with a worker running elsewhere handles those far better than trying to fit them into the limit.
- Can we write files?
- Not durably. Anything written during an invocation disappears with the instance, so uploads, generated documents and caches on disk all need moving to object storage — which is easy to overlook because it works fine in local development.
