- A dedicated machine and a dedicated identity. It signs in and drives applications as a user would, so it needs a Windows session, an account with the right access and a password policy that will not lock it out at an inconvenient moment.
- Why not use a person's account?
- Because it breaks and it obscures. Password changes, multi-factor prompts and that person's departure all stop the robot, and every action it performs appears in audit logs as having been done by them — which is misleading in exactly the systems where it matters.
- Where should credentials live?
- In the orchestrator's credential store, retrieved at runtime. Credentials embedded in an automation are visible to anybody who can open it, cannot be rotated without editing every automation using them, and end up in version control.
- What are queues for?
- Distributing work and knowing what happened. Items processed through a queue can be retried, allocated across robots and reported on, whereas a robot working through a list internally leaves no record of which items succeeded when it fails partway.
