UI/UX Design in Derby
Design work for Derby organisations covering both what a product does and how it looks. The two are routinely sold together and delivered as one — a great deal of work billed as UI/UX is visual design with the structural thinking skipped, which is why it looks better and works the same.
Why this comes up
The problem
The interface was designed to look modern, users still cannot complete the task they came for, and every request for change is answered with a new colour scheme.
What you get
What we deliver
- The task the user is trying to complete established before any screen is drawn
- Structure and flow decided first, since visual work cannot rescue a poor flow
- Interface designed for the real content, including its longest and emptiest states
- Interaction states drawn — loading, error, empty, disabled, partially complete
- Accessibility built into contrast, focus, sizing and reading order from the start
- Designs tested with someone outside the project before they are built

Working in Derby
East Midlands
Derby is an engineering city — aerospace, rail and automotive supply chains — so the work here skews toward integration with existing plant systems, quality and compliance workflows, and reporting that has to stand up to audit.
Most work here involves connecting shop-floor and plant systems to reporting the rest of the business can actually read, plus quality and compliance workflows that have to survive an audit.

UI/UX Design in Derby — common questions
- What is the actual difference between the two?
- UX decides what happens — which steps exist, in what order, what the system does when something goes wrong. UI decides how that reads on screen. Good visual work on a badly structured flow produces a product that photographs well and frustrates people.
- How do we tell which we are being sold?
- Ask what happens before the screens. Work that starts with a moodboard and finishes with polished mock-ups is visual design. Work that starts by mapping the task, the states and the failure cases is the other half, and it is the half that changes outcomes.
- Why do states matter so much?
- Because most of a real product is not the ideal case. Empty accounts, failed payments, partial data and long names are what users actually encounter, and designs that only cover the happy path get those improvised by developers under deadline.
- Should designs be tested before building?
- Yes, and it needs very few people. Watching five users attempt the task on a prototype finds the serious problems, and each of those is cheaper to fix in a design file than after it has been built, released and integrated with everything else.
- Do you work with businesses across Derbyshire?
- Yes. We are based in Leicester, United Kingdom and work with clients throughout East Midlands, including Derby and the surrounding Derbyshire area. Most collaboration happens remotely, and we travel for kick-offs and key milestones.
- What kind of Derby businesses do you usually work with?
- Most work here involves connecting shop-floor and plant systems to reporting the rest of the business can actually read, plus quality and compliance workflows that have to survive an audit. Beyond that we work across Advanced Manufacturing, Aerospace, Rail Engineering, Automotive and Logistics.
- Do you cover the areas around Derby?
- Yes — we work throughout East Midlands, including Nottingham, Leicester, Loughborough, Birmingham. Derby is an urban area of roughly 260,000+, and we take on work across the wider Derbyshire region rather than the city boundary alone.
