- Because segments multiply. Each new analysis dimension multiplies the number of account codes, whereas tagging a transaction leaves the account list short and lets you report by any combination — including combinations nobody anticipated when the system was configured.
- How many dimensions should we use?
- As many as answer real questions and no more, because each is a field somebody has to complete correctly. Dimensions added speculatively are left blank, and a dimension that is half-populated is worse than absent since the reporting looks complete.
- Should dimensions be mandatory?
- The ones you report on, yes. Optional dimensions get skipped under time pressure and the gaps appear at month end when it is too late to reconstruct. Enforcing at entry is unpopular for a fortnight and correct thereafter.
- When should reporting be built?
- During implementation, tested against real data. Reporting deferred to after go-live routinely discovers that a dimension nobody captured was needed, and by then there are transactions in the system that cannot be retrospectively tagged.
