- One with few distinct values, or one heavily concentrated. Distributing on a status column or a country where ninety per cent of rows share one value puts most of the table on one node, and every query against it becomes single-threaded regardless of cluster size.
- How do we know if we have skew?
- Measure it. The system tables report how many rows sit on each node, and a quick check after loading shows the distribution immediately — it is a five-minute exercise that frequently explains performance nobody could account for.
- Do sort keys matter as much?
- They matter for scanning. A sort key aligned with how queries filter lets whole blocks be skipped, and one chosen without reference to actual query patterns provides very little — so it is worth deriving from the query log rather than from assumptions.
- Is maintenance still necessary?
- Less than it was and not zero. Tables accumulate deleted rows and statistics drift as data changes, and while the platform now handles much of this automatically, a heavily updated warehouse still benefits from someone confirming that it is happening rather than assuming so.
