- Because immediate redelivery helps nothing. Most transient failures — a database briefly unavailable, a rate limit hit — resolve given a little time, whereas retrying instantly consumes the consumer and often makes the underlying problem worse.
- What does prefetch control?
- How many unacknowledged messages a consumer holds. Left unlimited, one consumer can take a large batch while others idle, and if it then fails everything it was holding is redelivered at once — a modest prefetch spreads work far more evenly.

- Somebody must, or it is only a quieter form of losing messages. Each entry represents work that did not happen — an order unprocessed, a notification unsent — so it needs monitoring and a review process rather than being treated as a place where problems disappear.
