Why does the model matter more than the visuals?

Because everything else depends on it. A well-shaped model makes calculations short and reports fast; a flat table makes every measure work around the structure, and the resulting complexity compounds with each new requirement.

What is wrong with one wide table?

It duplicates data, inflates the file and makes filtering ambiguous. Splitting facts from dimensions reduces size substantially and gives you relationships that behave predictably, which is what stops measures returning results nobody can explain.

Import or direct query?

Import for speed where the data fits and a scheduled refresh is acceptable; direct query where data must be current or is too large to import. Mixing them per table is common and it needs deciding deliberately rather than by default.

Should reports share one dataset?

Where they cover the same subject, yes. Separate datasets per report means the same logic maintained several times and the same figure calculated differently, and consolidating later is considerably harder than establishing a shared model at the outset.
