Icon Design in Cambridge
Custom icon sets for Cambridge businesses whose product or website needs symbols that mix badly when taken from three free libraries. Icons are unforgiving at small sizes — line weights, corner treatment and optical balance all have to be consistent or the set looks accidental.
Why this comes up
The problem
Icons get taken from wherever is convenient, so a page mixes three line weights and two visual styles. Individually each looks fine; together they read as assembled rather than designed.
What you get
What we deliver
- A defined grid, line weight and corner treatment applied across the whole set
- Optical adjustment per icon, since mathematically identical icons look uneven
- Drawn at the size they will be used, not scaled down from large artwork
- SVG output optimised, with the ability to inherit colour from CSS
- Accessible naming and labelling guidance, since an icon alone is not a label
- Source files and rules, so new icons added later match the existing family

Working in Cambridge
East of England
Cambridge has the densest deep-tech and biotech cluster in the country, so briefs here are frequently technical from the first conversation and the interesting problems are rarely the obvious ones.
Deep-tech and biotech clients bring genuinely technical briefs, often involving data pipelines, instrumentation or research tooling.

Icon Design in Cambridge — common questions
- Why not use a free icon library?
- For most websites that is entirely sensible, and we will say so. Custom sets earn their cost when you need concepts no library covers, or when your product's interface is dense enough that a mismatched set becomes visibly untidy.
- Do icons need text labels?
- Almost always. Very few icons are universally understood beyond a handful — a magnifying glass, a printer. Icon-only interfaces test poorly and create accessibility problems, so labels are the default and icon-only is the exception.
- Why do icons need optical adjustment?
- Because the eye does not measure. A circle drawn to the same bounding box as a square looks smaller, so it is drawn slightly larger to appear equal. A set built purely to a grid looks subtly wrong without anyone identifying why.
- What format do we get?
- Optimised SVG that inherits colour from your stylesheet, so one file works in light and dark themes. Icon fonts are a legacy approach with accessibility drawbacks and we would steer away from them.
- Do you work with businesses across Cambridgeshire?
- Yes. We are based in Leicester, United Kingdom and work with clients throughout East of England, including Cambridge and the surrounding Cambridgeshire area. Most collaboration happens remotely, and we travel for kick-offs and key milestones.
- What kind of Cambridge businesses do you usually work with?
- Deep-tech and biotech clients bring genuinely technical briefs, often involving data pipelines, instrumentation or research tooling. Beyond that we work across Technology, Life Sciences, Research, Higher Education and Biotech.
- Do you cover the areas around Cambridge?
- Yes — we work throughout East of England, including Norwich, Milton Keynes, London, Northampton. Cambridge is an urban area of roughly 150,000+, and we take on work across the wider Cambridgeshire region rather than the city boundary alone.
