- Because they are what evidences the signature. The certificate records who signed, when, from where and how they were verified, and a signed document without it is considerably weaker if the execution is ever disputed. Exporting the document alone loses that.
- How long must we keep signed agreements?
- It depends on the agreement, and generally longer than people assume — many contracts should be retained for six years after they end, and some considerably longer. That period continues regardless of which platform you use, which is why export is not optional.
- What happens to envelopes in progress?
- They live only in the old platform. Closing the account with agreements out for signature leaves signers with dead links and no completed record. Letting in-flight envelopes finish, or cancelling and reissuing them from the new platform, avoids that.
- Do templates transfer?
- No. Templates, signing workflows and field placements are rebuilt in the destination, which is real work and also an opportunity — most accounts carry templates for agreements that changed years ago and are still being sent.
