- Why are production copies such a problem?
- Because the data carries the same obligations in a test environment and almost none of the protection. Real names, addresses and payment references sit somewhere with looser access, weaker monitoring and frequently no backup — and a breach there is exactly as reportable.
- What should be done instead?
- Mask or generate the data. Realistic but synthetic records support development perfectly well, and where genuine data is unavoidable for a specific test it should be a deliberate, time-limited exception with the access recorded rather than the standing arrangement.
- Why look at constraints?
- Because the database is the last place bad data can be stopped. Where the application is the only thing enforcing rules, every import, script and integration can write records that should not exist — and by the time anybody notices there are thousands of them.
- Is performance part of this?
- Yes, and it is often the least expensive finding to act on. A handful of missing indexes commonly accounts for most of the load on a struggling database, and identifying them is considerably cheaper than the larger instance that was about to be purchased instead.
