Code Audit in Derby

An examination of a Derby organisation's codebase, looking for the things that are expensive to discover later. Dependency licences that conflict with how the product is sold, credentials committed years ago and still in the history, and the parts of the system only one person understands.

Why this comes up

The problem

Nobody has looked at what the dependencies are licensed under, and a key was committed in 2021 and never rotated.

What you get

What we deliver

  • Dependency licences catalogued, with anything incompatible with your model flagged
  • Secrets searched for across the whole history, not just the current files
  • Dependency currency assessed, including what is unmaintained upstream
  • Test coverage examined where it matters rather than as a headline percentage
  • Concentration risk identified — the areas one person alone can safely change
  • Findings ranked by consequence, with an honest view of what can be left alone

Working in Derby

East Midlands

Derby is an engineering city — aerospace, rail and automotive supply chains — so the work here skews toward integration with existing plant systems, quality and compliance workflows, and reporting that has to stand up to audit.

Most work here involves connecting shop-floor and plant systems to reporting the rest of the business can actually read, plus quality and compliance workflows that have to survive an audit.

Code Audit in Derby — common questions

Why do dependency licences matter?
Because some of them impose conditions on how you distribute your own software. A copyleft library pulled in three levels deep can carry obligations that conflict with selling a closed product, and this is routinely discovered during a funding round rather than before it.
Why search the whole history for secrets?
Because removing a key from the current version does not remove it from the repository. Anything committed remains retrievable unless the history is rewritten, so a credential deleted in a later commit is still there — and still valid if nobody rotated it.
Is test coverage a useful measure?
Only when read carefully. A high percentage achieved by testing trivial code alongside an untested payment path is worse than a lower figure concentrated where failure is costly, so the useful question is what is covered rather than how much.
What does the report look like?
Ordered by what happens if it is ignored, and explicit about what is acceptable. Every codebase contains things that could be better, and an audit listing four hundred of them equally is a document nobody reads — whereas six items that genuinely threaten the business, with the rest recorded as known and tolerated, is something a team can act on this quarter.
Do you work with businesses across Derbyshire?
Yes. We are based in Leicester, United Kingdom and work with clients throughout East Midlands, including Derby and the surrounding Derbyshire area. Most collaboration happens remotely, and we travel for kick-offs and key milestones.
What kind of Derby businesses do you usually work with?
Most work here involves connecting shop-floor and plant systems to reporting the rest of the business can actually read, plus quality and compliance workflows that have to survive an audit. Beyond that we work across Advanced Manufacturing, Aerospace, Rail Engineering, Automotive and Logistics.
Do you cover the areas around Derby?
Yes — we work throughout East Midlands, including Nottingham, Leicester, Loughborough, Birmingham. Derby is an urban area of roughly 260,000+, and we take on work across the wider Derbyshire region rather than the city boundary alone.
