Auth0 Management in Exeter

Managing Auth0 for Exeter organisations, where custom code accumulates in the login path. Actions and rules added over the years to enrich tokens, call external services or apply business logic form a small application that runs on every single authentication — usually untested, frequently undocumented, and able to lock out every customer.

Why this comes up

The problem

Six actions run on every login, one calls an external service, and none of them have any tests.

What you get

What we deliver

  • Existing actions inventoried with what each does and why recorded
  • External calls in the login path examined, since these add latency and a dependency
  • Logic moved into the application where it does not need to run at authentication
  • Error handling reviewed, because a failing action can prevent all logins
  • Changes tested in a separate tenant rather than adjusted in production
  • Tenant configuration exported, as much of it exists only in the dashboard

Working in Exeter

South West

Exeter is the commercial centre for a very large rural catchment, so businesses here routinely serve customers spread across Devon rather than a compact urban area, and travel time is a real cost in every quote.

Auth0 Management in Exeter — common questions

Why is code in the login path risky?
Because everything depends on it. An action that throws an error or times out can prevent every customer from signing in, and unlike an ordinary application fault there is no partial degradation — authentication either works or the product is entirely unavailable.
What about external calls?
They make somebody else's uptime yours. An action fetching data from an internal API on every login means that service being slow makes your logins slow, and that service being down can stop them altogether — so it needs a timeout and a fallback.
Should logic live there at all?
Only where it genuinely must. Enriching a token with a role is reasonable; performing a lookup the application could do after authentication is not, and moving that work out of the login path removes both the latency and the failure mode.
How should changes be tested?
In a separate tenant that mirrors production. Editing an action in the live tenant means the next login exercises it for real, and since a mistake affects every user simultaneously, the usual caution about production changes applies with more force than most places.
Do you work with businesses across Devon?
Yes. We are based in Leicester, United Kingdom and work with clients throughout South West, including Exeter and the surrounding Devon area. Most collaboration happens remotely, and we travel for kick-offs and key milestones.
What kind of Exeter businesses do you usually work with?
Field service scheduling and routing for businesses covering a wide rural patch, plus professional services systems. Beyond that we work across Higher Education, Professional Services, Healthcare, Retail and Environmental Science.
Do you cover the areas around Exeter?
Yes — we work throughout South West, including Plymouth, Truro, Bristol. Exeter is an urban area of roughly 130,000+, and we take on work across the wider Devon region rather than the city boundary alone.
