A credential given to a partner five years ago, still valid, possibly shared internally with people who have since left, is a standing exposure — and rotating it requires knowing who holds it, which is why the consumer inventory comes first.
- What if documentation and behaviour disagree?
- Assume integrators have built against the behaviour. Once a discrepancy exists, someone somewhere depends on what the API actually does rather than what the documentation claims, so correcting the documentation is safe and correcting the behaviour may not be.
- Can we remove unused endpoints?
- Once you can demonstrate they are unused, yes — and the demonstration is the whole difficulty. A period of monitoring, a deprecation notice to identified consumers and a defined removal date turns an indefinite maintenance obligation into a scheduled piece of work, which is usually the main reason this audit pays for itself.
