3D Modelling in Durham
Building the models that renders, animations, configurators and printed prototypes are made from. For Durham businesses the important question is what the model is for — a model built for a photorealistic still is constructed very differently from one that must run in a browser at sixty frames a second.
Why this comes up
The problem
Models get built once for one purpose and then reused for another they were never suited to. A dense CAD model dropped into a website makes the page unusable on a phone.
What you get
What we deliver
- Models built to the polygon budget the destination actually allows
- Clean topology where the model must deform or animate
- UV mapping and materials set up so textures apply predictably
- Real-time optimised versions for web and configurator use
- Export in the formats your pipeline needs — glTF, FBX, OBJ or STEP
- Source files handed over, so the model can be reworked without rebuilding

Working in Durham
North East
Durham's economy is dominated by its university and cathedral, so the commercial base is small and much of the local demand comes from spinouts and suppliers attached to the institutions rather than from independent industry.
Research spinout software and visitor systems, usually on institutional procurement timelines rather than commercial ones.

3D Modelling in Durham — common questions
- Can one model serve every use?
- Rarely. A model for print rendering can be extremely dense; one for a website must be light enough to download and render on a phone. Usually a high-detail master is built and lighter versions derived from it, which is cheaper than modelling twice.
- We have CAD already. Is that enough?
- CAD is engineering-accurate and usually far too heavy for visual or web use, with topology unsuited to rendering. It is an excellent starting point and normally needs conversion rather than replacement.
- Can the model be used for 3D printing?
- If built for it. Printing requires watertight geometry with correct wall thicknesses — a model that looks perfect on screen can be unprintable. Say at the outset if printing is intended, because it changes how it is built.
- What about a web configurator?
- Very achievable, and the constraint is file size rather than possibility. glTF with compressed textures loads acceptably; a raw CAD export will not. That budget is set before modelling starts.
- Do you work with businesses across County Durham?
- Yes. We are based in Leicester, United Kingdom and work with clients throughout North East, including Durham and the surrounding County Durham area. Most collaboration happens remotely, and we travel for kick-offs and key milestones.
- What kind of Durham businesses do you usually work with?
- Research spinout software and visitor systems, usually on institutional procurement timelines rather than commercial ones. Beyond that we work across Higher Education, Tourism & Heritage, Public Sector, Retail and Research.
- Do you cover the areas around Durham?
- Yes — we work throughout North East, including Newcastle, Sunderland, York. Durham is an urban area of roughly 70,000+, and we take on work across the wider County Durham region rather than the city boundary alone.
